Montana Fly Fishing

Montana fly fishing is world renown with its blue ribbon trout rivers and numerous mountain lakes.  From wade to drift boat fishing, you'll find incredible scenery along with great fishing in Montana.  Fly fishing is one of our favrorite summer and winter activities.  Here are a few of our favorite Montana rivers:

Yellowstone River – The longest free-flowing river in the lower 48, the Yellowstone River is 692 miles long and is famous for its trout habitat.  The Montana section of this rivers contains brown, cutthroat, cutbow and rainbow trout ranging from 12” to 24” on average.  The best way to fish this river is by drift boat, but shore fishing is possible.

Madison River – Divided into two sections, upper and lower, the Madison River is a great place for Montana fly fishing.  The Upper Madison runs from Quake Lake to Ennis and includes fast, shallow water.  It is a trout stream with rainbows and browns.  Wade fishing or drift boat fishing are appropriate on this section.  Also, check out the Lower Madison as it flows through Beartrap Canyon.  This section has similar conditions to the Upper Madison.

Gallatin River – About 120 miles long, the Gallatin River is a tributary of the Missouri River.  It is incredible scenic as it winds through alpine meadows and drops into the Gallatin Canyon on its way to the Gallatin Valley. In fact, part of the movie A River Runs Through It was filmed on the Gallatin. The Gallatin River is home to brown, cutthroat, cutbow and rainbow trout, along with a few grayling.  The Gallatin is provides Bozeman anglers with easy access to wade fly fishing.

Spring Creek – Near Bozeman and Livingston, you'll find incredible spring creeks including Amstrong's, Nelson' and Milesnick's.  Great locations for dry fly fishing, wading is most popular here.

Also worth visiting are some of Montana's lakes.  Montana is home to lakes that are perfect for fly fishing for trout, whitefish, pike and bass.  Many of the best lakes are dam created.  A boat is the preferred method of fishing these Montana lakes.  A few of our favorites include Ashley Lake, Bean Lake, Georgetown Lake, and Ruby Reservoir

In Montana you'll find world class fly fishing.  Fly fish by day and the return to the comfort of your piece of Montana real estate.
