Montana Whitewater Rafting

Southwest Montana is a great place to go whitewater rafting and kayaking. With the spectacular scenery of the Gallatin River as it wines its way through 3.5 billion year old metamorphic rock of the Madison mountains, you can't go wrong with whitewater rafting adventure in Montana.  In addition to the Gallatin River, Montana is also home to the Madison, Jefferson and Missouri Rivers.  With a great diversity in water levels and difficulty, there is fun for everyone on Montana Rivers.

Gallatin River – Incredible setting for a whitewater rafting trip. Located between Bozeman and Big Sky, the Gallatin is a great river for all.  With everything from Class I to Class IV rapids, the Gallatin will suit a first time rafter or family trip along with those seeking high adventure.  The Upper Gallatin runs at Class II and III and is perfect for a half day on the river.  Alternatively, check out the Lower Gallatin for Class III and IV adventurous water.  Looking for a scenic trip with minimal whitewater? The Upper Canyon of the Gallatin River is perfect for scenic float trips on Class I and II waters.

Yellowstone River – Big, free flowing water characterizes much of the Yellowstone River as it runs through Paradise Valley.  Run the full day 17 mile stretch and enjoy Class II and III rapids along with great views.  A highlight include Yankee Jim Canyon.  This stretch of river is great for families and first time rafters.  If you are interested in kayaking, inflatable kayaks are a great way to travel this stretch of river as well.  Visit Yellowstone National Park and go whitewater rafting at the same time.

A few tips for your Montana whitewater rafting experience:

  • Come prepared with proper clothing.  Even when air temperatures are warm, remember that river temperatures are cold.  Talk to your outfitter to make sure you are bringing the right clothing for the specific season, weather and river.
  • Thing about your footwear.  Flip flops are great until you find yourself in the river unexpectedly. Instead wear attached footwear such as Tevas or Chacos.  Alternatively, an old pair of tennis shoes that can get wet are great for the river.
  • Consider your eye wear.  If you wear glasses, be sure to attach them to your head with the help of a handy strap.  Contact lens wearers should protect their eyes with sunglasses or on more extreme water consider switching to glasses for the day.
  • Choose a river that is appropriate for your and your groups skill level.
  • Don't forget about the sun.  Bring sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses for protection.
  • Leave your valuables in the car or better yet at home.
